A new report has claimed that Ubisoft is working on a new battle royale that’s “heavily inspired by Apex Legends”. It is apparently being worked on under the project name “Scout”, and has been in development for a few years.
Reported by Insider Gaming, sources the outlet spoke to claim that it will feature “very similar” characters to Apex Legends, with its own spin on popular characters like Pathfinder, Lifeline, etc. One anonamous source that spoke to Insider Gaming stated: “I think the goal is to capitalize on the player count of Apex dropping and them [Ubisoft higher-ups] thinking there’s room in the market for another hero Battle Royale.”
This report comes shortly after massive developments at Ubisoft, with the company recently splitting off its major IP into a new subsidiary that’s owned in part by Tencent. It’s unclear whether where this “Project Scout” would fall in the split, but given it’s apparently been in the work for a for years it’s safe to assume that it’s been removed from any company-wide strategy shifts. At least for now.
This however isn’t the first time Ubisoft has tried its hand at putting out a battle royale. Hyper Scape was its first real attempt at such a venture, a pretty decent but tragically short lived free-to-play FPS that didn’t quite manage to build enough of a community to warrant its continued existance. Still, we’re a long way from 2020 when Hyper Scape came out, so here’s hoping that this Project Scout does better. That is, if it exists, and actually comes out.
