Welcome back to 2005: a classic version of MapleStory has been announced to celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary

It’s a wonderful day for MapleStory fans, and those with a deep nostalgic love for early 2000’s MMOs. MapleStory Classic World has been announced as part of the game’s 20th anniversary celebration, a recreation of the original version of the game with select quality of life improvements.

This version of the game, which has yet to have a release date, is being led by the original MapleStory team leader and lead developer Miyoung Oh (known as Nemi) and a team “that understands what made early MapleStory so special”. According to her, the team is bringing back the nostalgic feel of the original game while bringing things back “carefully”.

Players will be able to create brand-new characters, and experience all the original content recreated for this modern version of the OG experience. More on MapleStory Classic World will be revealed in the coming months, with additional details on the game coming in the second half of 2025, with an official announcement coming at the official offline MapleStory event. Whether this is the same event as MapleStory Fest which was held in LA last year is unclear, so it’s best to keep an eye out for more information for finer details.

MapleStory Classic World follows the trend of beloved old school MMOs going back to their roots in order to bring back nolstalgic players, as we’ve seen with World of Warcraft as well as Blade and Soul. These revamped versions of older MMOs have proven exceptionally popular among their dedicated fanbases as well as lapsed players, so it’s no great shock that Wizet would also go back to that particular well. Especially when you consider how big a success MapleStory was back in the day. After all, you can’t exactly build a 20 year game off nothing, can you?
